Safety in Numbers: Cybersecurity 101 for the IRO

Cybersecurity. It’s in the news a lot these days – and none of the news is good. Do you know your company’s cybersecurity risks? Is your management and board focused on managing this important threat? How should you discuss cybersecurity from a corporate governance standpoint? Our expert panel will cover the basics of cybersecurity risk, best practices for communicating what your company and board are doing about it, and what to do if your company experiences a security breach.


Steven H. Shapiro
Partner, Krasnow Saunders Kaplan & Beninati

Steven Shapiro returned to private practice in 2011 after serving as a chief privacy officer and/or general counsel for a number of publicly traded companies, including Taylor Capital Group, Inc, eLoyalty Corporation and First Midwest Bancorp, Inc. A nationally recognized expert on cybersecurity and corporate governance, he also advises on securities law, M&A transactions, bank financing, employment law and IT contracting. Shapiro received the 2010 Corporate Secretary Magazine Small and Mid-Cap Governance Professional of the Year and was named an Illinois Super Lawyer for 2013-2015. He has a bachelor’s degree from Columbia University and J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School.

Andrew Liuzzi
U.S. Crisis Lead, Data Security & Privacy Group, Edelman

As executive vice president, crisis and risk management, Andrew Liuzzi helps Edelman’s global clients proactively mitigate issues and develop long-term reputation management strategies. His recent work on data security and privacy involved cyberattacks, hacktivists, lost devices with sensitive information and intellectual property theft. Liuzzi joined Edelman’s Reputation Management Group in 2006 after six years in the corporate practice at Manning Selvage & Lee, where he did significant work on public affairs positioning surrounding the U.S. Army’s ongoing military operations in the Middle East and Central Asia. 


Ruth Venning

Ruth Venning has extensive experience in investor relations, most recently as director of investor relations for Hospira, Inc., which was acquired by Pfizer in 2015. Her experience includes roles with Telephone and Data Systems, Inc., United Airlines, Calamos Asset Management and international public relations for the Japanese government in Japan. Venning established Hospira’s corporate governance outreach program in 2009. She holds an MBA in finance from Lake Forest Graduate School of Management and a master’s degree in corporate communications from Northwestern University.
